Mr Zachariah George (77), renowned Rubber Technologist, Consultant and Chairman of Asian Tyre & Rubber Conference (ATRC), the flagship event of Asian Business Media (ABM), passed away on the morning of December 26, 2017, following cardiac arrest. His body will be brought to No 4/1 Cassuarina Drive, Neelankarai, ECR Road, Chennai, at 8 am on Thursday. The funeral will be held at 11 am the same day at the Chennai Municipal corporation Cemetery, St Mary’s Road, Mandeville, Chennai.
Zach, as he is popularly known, was among the most widely recognised and respected industry veterans whose contributions enriched rubber and tyre industries over decades. He was with MRF in various capacities for over 41 years and retired as General Manager, Development, in 2007. He was actively associated with the global rubber fraternity throughout his career and even later. Zach did his Rubber Technology graduation from National College
of Rubber Technology, London.
He leaves behind wife Suzi and sons Vivek Zachariah and Dipak Zachariah.
Zach had been a strong supporter, associate and advisor of ABM, the publishers of Tyre Asia, Rubber Asia and AutoParts Asia, and also the globally known ATRC. He chaired the conference organising committee right from 2011 when it made its debut. Late John Powath, former CEO of ABM, and Zach joined together and turned ATRC into a globally respected brand. As Chairman, Zach had the impeccable skill to look into every detail of the event and ensure its success.
ATRC is a technology-based conference tagged on to sustainability and environment protection, which makes the selection of the theme and choice of speakers and their presentation subjects very important. Zach has always been a master at this, picking up the most relevant topic as the theme and most suitable speakers to make presentations. The way the different technical sessions were decided and speakers grouped into them based on their subjects had a Zach touch to it. He was showered with praise from all around.
Zach was a man of all seasons. His interests did not end with technology consultations. He was a voracious reader and a big lover of music and movies. His sense of humour and communication skills made Zach a friend of all who came across him. We at ABM bow our heads to the memories that Zach left us with, and his great support and advice. We pray God bring peace and strength to his family at this hour of grief.
Antony Powath, President, ABM, said: “Saying 2017 is not been a good year for ABM is an understatement. We have lost yet another friend, mentor this year. Zachariah George, commonly called as Zach, was a veteran in the tyre and rubber industry who had a wealth of experience for more than four decades. Zach was very humble, down to earth person who could match up in cracking some good jokes like our Founder CEO late John Powath. Loved his wine and family and had an acute knowledge of the latest technology. His command over the English language and people skills are something to be admired upon. Alas, it is clear to see that father time waits for no one certainly holds true. He will surely be missed.”
