Tenneco Offers Technologies For Exhaust After-treatment

Tenneco Automotive India is introducing global ideas for cleaner air, smoother, quieter and safer transportation. Its exhaust after-treatment technologies wring out maximum fuel efficiency from engines and its NOx reduction technologies treat effectively the resulting high NOx. “Apart from improving fuel economy, this also helps in extending oil change intervals, and in reduced maintenance and service costs for Commercial Vehicles (CV),” Sagar Hemade, Managing Director, Tenneco Automotive India, told AutoParts Asia. 

The transition to BS-VI in India will give bigger opportunities to Tenneco, he said. “BS-VI will give us huge opportunities to bring our proven global technologies from other matured regions into India. It will also encourage us to develop our own fit-for-India products and systems to meet the unique systems here. The BS-VI products under development are based on our global products that perform successfully in Europe and the US.  The systems are, however, tweaked to make them more reliable and robust to meet the specific conditions in India for BS-VI. These technologies and products are packaged for Indian CV applications which need more space than their EU/US counterparts. This is a different challenge altogether that we are successfully meeting,” he said.

Tenneco is a leading supplier of BS-IV exhaust after-treatment products and systems for almost all the major OEMs in India. Its products include advance Nox abatement SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and dosing solutions and DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) /DOC+POC (Particle Oxidation Catalyst) for light, medium and heavy duty truck. The company wants to strengthen its position in the CV segment with the upcoming BS-VI emission norms. The US-based company is closely engaged with all major customers in India for developing the after-treatment systems for their BS-VI engines.

Advance After-treatment 

Tenneco is working on advance after-treatment systems that are fit-for-market. Work on advance Ride Performance (RP) systems with adaptive features are also on.

“We make sure that our products are integratable with the associated electronics and control systems of the vehicles. We also support fuel-economy initiatives by light weighting, energy recovery technologies, emission control, and active sound modulation systems,” Hemade said.

With the advent of BS-VI, Tenneco expects a significant overall increase in content, both mechanical and electronics. There will be additional components like particulate filters and associated electronics that would get augmented. The after-treatment technologies for BS-IV commercial vehicles comprise SCR catalyst elements and urea decomposition system along with associated electronics, sensors, controls, software, urea tank, dosing pump and injectors.

Writing algorithms, codes and control software for IoT and AI is possible with the skilled resources the company has in India, he said. We have done a few IoT projects at our centre in Bangalore for active adaptive suspension systems with ‘look ahead’ features and also some controls for our urea dosing systems for BS-IV. Tenneco has planned for network connectivity and remote monitoring features for its key production lines such as laser shell manufacturing and automated canning lines. These technologies will help understand the performance of lines, improve uptime by remote repairs and programme updates and additions. A few such machines are in production at Tenneco and we are benefiting from that,” Hemade said.

With advance electronics, software and controls are becoming integrated with exhaust after-treatment systems. These products are ‘future-proofed’ to get further integration with IoT and AI, he said. So, technologies like telemetry-continuous broadcasting of engine and emissions data online, autonomous driving etc. are easily adaptable. The same applies for our RP technologies that have built-in Telemetric and IoT capabilities to potentially transmit information on road topography and location mapping,” Hemade said.  (APA)
