India is emerging as a global market for off-highway vehicles and construction equipment as India’s construction industry is expected to be the third largest in the world by 2025. India is a vibrant market for the construction machinery makers while the rest of Asian markets are subdued. The Indian construction industry, that employs over 30 million people and makes substantial contribution to the national economy, is in a boom phase.
Several multinational companies like JCB and Volvo have their own subsidiaries in India. Many others have established joint ventures like Tata-Hitachi, L&T-Komatsu, and Ammann-Apollo. Some of the large construction equipment are assembled and manufactured in India from imported parts. This has made India a global hub for construction vehicles and equipment.
Construction vehicles or off highway vehicles are the largest segment in the construction equipment market. Earth movers, concrete equipment and material handling equipment also are market leaders.
In addition to the road sector projects, widespread industrialisation, the proposed smart cities, housing projects, building of metros, railways, airports, ports and several other public and private sector projects spur the demand for construction equipment, especially vehicles.
Mining and quarrying are other major segments that create huge demand for off-highway vehicles and construction equipment in India. These have given tremendous opportunities to the machinery manufacturers who are keen to tap the potential to the maximum extent. The evolution only reiterates that off road vehicles are on growth track; the rising enthusiasm is evident from the large number of companies registered to participate in the BaumaConexpo India, the International Trade Fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines and construction vehicles, to be held at HUDA grounds, Gurgaon, New Delhi, between December 12 and 15, 2016.
BaumaConexpo India, is presented by two of the most successful international trade-fair organisers: MesseMünchen International (MMI), organiser of Bauma, and the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), organiser of Conexpo-CON/AGG. In a very short time, their combined expertise has made BaumaConexpo India a must-attend event for the international construction machinery industry.
Organising trade shows for the international construction machinery industry is the core competence of MMI. Its portfolio includes the world’s leading trade show, Bauma in Munich, and the brand event Bauma China in Shanghai. It also cooperates with AEM to organiseBaumaConexpo India in Gurgaon/Delhi, and BaumaConexpo Africa in Johannesburg. After holding three successful editions of this show under the name bC India, the partners have agreed on the new name: BaumaConexpo India.
The event gives a most comprehensive range of products and services in the region, the latest state-of-the-art technology and a wide range of superior-quality services for all sectors of the construction industry. The fair covers every aspect of the industry under the banners of: All around construction sites; mining, extraction and processing of raw materials; production of building materials; and components and the service suppliers.
Under the ‘All around construction sites,’ the show will focus on construction vehicles, earth-moving machines, road construction and maintenance equipment, pipe and cable laying equipment and tools, lifting appliances and conveyors, construction equipment, tools and special systems, handling and processing concrete and mortar at construction sites, formwork and scaffoldings and site installations.
The section on ‘Mining, extraction and processing of raw materials,’ will feature machines for extraction of raw materials and for mining, handling of raw materials, mineral processing including coke oven equipment.
Under ‘Production of building materials,’ BaumaConexpo will cover manufacture of cement, lime and gypsum compounds for building materials, machines and systems for producing concrete, concrete products and pre-fabricated components, machines and plants for producing asphalt, machines and plants for producing pre-mixed dry mortar, plaster, screed and building supply store products, machines and plants for producing lime sandstone and building products using power plant residue (fly ash, slag) besides, building material handling and packaging plant.
The Component and service suppliers section will present transmission engineering, fluid technology and power generation units, accessories and wear parts, services, test, measurement and process control engineering, communication and navigation and safety.
According to the Construction Equipment and Building Material Machinery Association within the VerbandDeutscherMaschinen und Anlagenbau (VDMA—German Engineering Federation), India is currently the only Asian country able to point to a growing construction machinery market. Infrastructure development is commonly held to be the driving force behind this development. The Indian government and international development banks are making billions available for new roads, bridges, sea and airports, as well as railway and energy projects.
The German foreign trade and inward investment agency, Germany Trade And Invest (GTAI), has observed that India, with its billion-strong population, pointedly dismantles barriers to infrastructure projects and lends further impetus to civil engineering. According to GTAI data, for example, expressway construction in India in 2016/17 is to be expanded to 15,000 km compared to 6,000 km the year before.
The British market research company, Off-Highway Research, after evaluating the present and future conditions, has made a very favourable forecast for the next five years as well. It envisages that about 55,000 construction machines will be sold in India in 2016 climbing steadily to more than 71,000 units by 2020.
The positive and promising trend in the Indian construction industry is reflected in the names and number of registration for participation in the event. The list of the key exhibitors include ACE, Avtec, BAUER, BKT, Herrenknecht, Kobelco, Liebherr, Linnhoff, Liugong, MAN, Peri, Puzzolana, Sany, Schwing Stetter, Soilmec, Wacker Neuson, Volvo, Wirtgen , Caterpillar, JCB, Potain, Putzmeister, TIL and XCMG.
There are some prominent names among the first time exhibitors. Comacchio, Kubota and L&T, and Komatsu will be making their debut appearance at the show. Many others like Case New Holland Construction Equipment (India) Pvt. Ltd, Ceat Specialty Tyres, Elofic, Karcher Cleaning, Lanxess India, Man Trucks India, Metalman Auto, Roots Industries and Thyssenkrupp Industries India also will exhibit in the trade fair.
Igor Palka, CEO of bC Expo India, which organizes BaumaConexpo India, said, “We have registrations from many big names and a pretty impressive cross-section of the industry.”
International interest also remains unbroken. “Joint booths from China, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, North and South America, and Spain have already registered. We expect more to follow. That clearly shows how important BaumaConexpo India is for the international companies,” Palka said. That view is shared by Dimitrov Krishnan, Vice President and Head of Volvo CE India: “We are looking forward to BaumaConexpo India and are expecting a number of visitors to our booth from North India, which has been an area of focus for the government, and where infrastructure development is expected to pick up further in the coming months.”

As business activity levels continue to rise in India, we expect a busy show. We want to use the trade fair to develop relationships and get acquainted with companies from the North.”
Companies in the road construction sector also look forward to the trade fair. Sunil Sapru, Chief Executive Marketing, Ammann Apollo India, said, “In my opinion, BaumaConexpo India is an ideal platform to showcase our new launches and strengths.”
Ramesh Palagiri, Managing Director and CEO, Wirtgen India Pvt Ltd, said, “BaumaConexpo India is a very professionally organised trade fair at the right location. The national capital Delhi in the north is a centre of activity. At the same time, we had many visitors last time not only from the North, but also from the West and South of India.” Ashok Tanna, Managing Director, Linnhoff India Pvt Ltd., is responding to the current market situation with a bigger trade fair presence: “We secured a lot of orders after the last expo. North India is one of the prime zones brimming with road development and infrastructure projects and we look forward to providing our clients technology- based solutions. Hence we have decided to increase our stall space to showcase these new technologies to our customers.”
